Haig-Brown Writer in Residence, Vancouver Island
.
Published authors are being invited to apply for the 2013-2014 Haig-Brown House Writer in Residence position. The residency entails spending the winter months (or a portion thereof) living in the Haig-Brown Heritage House, which is under the management of the Museum at Campbell River.

The writer’s time will be divided between pursuing personal writing projects and providing literary advice and support to the local community, with writing time favored on a 60/40 basis (as per Canada Council’s Author Residencies Program guidelines). The writer would also participate in Museum winter programming.
A stipend of up to $2000 per month, depending on available funding, will be provided.

A Self-Publisher’s Guide to Kobo
Writer Molly Greene explains Kobo to her (non-Canadian or UK) writing audience and how they set up and sign in with Kobo and how to upload and sell your e-book with them:
“If you’re wondering, “What’s a Kobo?” Here’s the back story: Kobo entered the scene in 2010, marketing it’s e-Reader as a less expensive alternative to Kindle and Nook, which are currently the best selling e-Reader devices. That will change if Hiroshi Mikitani gets his way. Mikitani is CEO of Japan’s largest e-commerce company, Rakuten, which purchased Canadian-owned Kobo in 2011. Since the acquisition, he’s publicly vowed to destroy Amazon – and the competition might just prove to be good news for self-published authors.” Read her blog post.
.
Just went to Kobo’s website and found this offer: Right now Kobo has a special offer for authors:
“All authors signed up for Kobo Writing Life will automatically get an additional 10% in royalties (80% rather than 70%) for any IPP Term sales between September 1, 2012 and November 30, 2012 EST).”

… Sell More Books. In part 1 of “Improve Your Amazon Page” the importance of a great cover that reflects the books content was discussed. What else can we do to sell more books:

It can take 3 to 5 days for the Author Page to appear on the Amazon.com site – so start right now adding content to your Author Page. If you add or make changes later, they will appear on the Author Page within 24 hours of the time you add them in Author Central. Sad News: Timely.is will shut down on November 16th
Timely.is started as a fun side project back in 2010. Since then it has grown to help tens of thousands of people publish millions of Tweets and Facebook updates. Starting November 16th you will no longer be able to access your Timely.is account.
They explained:
“When we launched Timely almost 2 years ago there were no other tools that would automatically figure out the best time for a Tweet to go out. Thankfully there are some great alternatives today such as Buffer or Hootsuite.”
Well, not as conveniently and easy to use as Timely was… I will miss it.
