From useful blogs and articles I found on the Internet:

iBookstore now in 17 Latin-American countries
Christian Zibreg wrote in idownloadblog.com:
“Apple has rolled out paid iBookstore content in a slew of new countries. Paid electronic books first surfaced this morning over in the New Zealand iBookstore, but subsequent reports confirmed that paid content is now live – or in the process of going live – in as much as seventeen Latin American markets such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.”
One more reason to sell your books on Apple’s iPad.

Sad News: Timely.is will shut down on November 16th
Timely.is started as a fun side project back in 2010. Since then it has grown to help tens of thousands of people publish millions of Tweets and Facebook updates. Starting November 16th you will no longer be able to access your Timely.is account.
They explained:
“When we launched Timely almost 2 years ago there were no other tools that would automatically figure out the best time for a Tweet to go out. Thankfully there are some great alternatives today such as Buffer or Hootsuite.”
Well, not as conveniently and easy to use as Timely was… I will miss it.

  • Pages can’t add people to circles until the page is added first or mentioned.”

Sexist Responses / Reviews to Women Writing
Sarah Sentilles worte in a Harvard University blog an article “Sexist responses to women writing about religion”.  Beside her personal experiences she cited statistics from Women in Literary Arts:

The Atlantic published 184 articles and pieces of fiction by men and 64 by women; 18 of their book reviewers were men and 8 were women; and 24 of the authors reviewed were men, compared to 12 women.
Harper’s Magazine published 65 articles by men and 13 articles by women; 23 of their book reviewers were men and 10 were women; 53 of the authors reviewed were men, 19 were women.
The New York Review of Books published 133 articles by men and 19 by women; 201 of their book reviewers were male and 53 were female; and they reviewed 75 male authors and only 17 female authors.
The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic, The London Review of Books—all pay more attention to books and essays and articles, poems and short stories written by men than they do to those written by women.”

My comment on this: What do you make of this stats? Well, maybe use a man’s pen name?

Amazon in India
David Gaughran writes about the new Amazon store in India. His findings:

  • Indian sales are not broken out in KDP.
  • There are no Indian Best Seller lists.
  • Amazon only pays 35% on Indian sales, regardless of list price.

“The Indian market has huge potential: a burgeoning middle class which speaks English and enjoys an increasing level of disposable income. Skeptics might point to high levels of poverty and low levels of internet connectivity, but with a population of 1.2 billion, only a small percentage of the population needs to purchase devices (or read on existing devices like smartphones) before this is an extremely important market.”

Barnes and Noble pulls Amazon Books from Shelves

Stephanie Chandler writes: “While it may seem that Barnes&Noble is throwing a tantrum, it looks to me like they are standing up against a big bully.  Amazon’s KDP Select Program requires authors to limit their e-book distribution to Amazon only, forcing authors to eliminate distribution to Barnes and Noble Nook readers (plus iPad and other e-readers).  I don’t think it’s fair for Amazon to require exclusivity.  It’s not fair to readers or to authors who may want to acquire and distribute books elsewhere, and it’s a blatant attempt by Amazon to further dominate the e-book market.”

A Self-Publisher’s Guide to Kobo

Writer Molly Greene explains Kobo to her (non-Canadian or UK) writing audience and how they set up and sign in with Kobo and how to upload and sell your e-book with them:

“If you’re wondering, “What’s a Kobo?” Here’s the back story: Kobo  entered the scene in 2010, marketing it’s e-Reader as a less expensive alternative to Kindle and Nook, which are currently the best selling e-Reader devices.  That will change if Hiroshi Mikitani gets his way.  Mikitani is CEO of Japan’s largest e-commerce company, Rakuten, which purchased Canadian-owned Kobo in 2011. Since the acquisition, he’s publicly vowed to destroy Amazon – and the competition might just prove to be good news for self-published authors.”  Read her blog post.
.

Just went to Kobo’s website  and found this offer: Right now Kobo has a special offer for authors:
“All authors signed up for Kobo Writing Life will automatically get an additional 10% in royalties (80% rather than 70%) for any IPP Term sales between September 1, 2012 and November 30, 2012 EST).”

What Do You Have Friends For?

.

.
How friends and family can help to improve your Amazon Ranking will be a reminder today, short before the holiday season starts. They indeed can help you so much – they even don’t need to buy the book (again). Amazon can give a great book a big boost to “be discovered”. These little features take only a few seconds, but can make a big difference in your Amazon ranking – and subsequently in the success of your book.
.
Ask all your acquaintances, friends, family to:.

  • Write a REVIEW of your book. Even if the book already has lots of reviews already. As more reviews as better for the author and as more potential buyers can see the popularity of the work. Amazon rules are against family members’ reviews.  So ask only the ones with a different name/address for a review. They need an Amazon account and at least made previously one purchase of a physical or digital item.
    .
  • LISTMANIA: Amazon allows all account holders to create a “list” of their favorite things…such as books and it is called, Listmania!  So if you have written a book, your friends and even you can create a Listmania! list, and certainly include your own book
    .
  • “HIGHLIGHTS” in your book are another item in Amazon’s algorithm list for book popularity: If you friends have a Kindle, let them highlight some wise or fun quotations from the book. If enough people share their highlights, they’ll show up in your e-book. Amazon will display these “Popular Highlights” by combining the highlights of all Kindle customers and identifying the passages with the most highlights.
    .
  • Good old-fashioned word of mouth.  Let your friends and family brag about your books, or mention it in their blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Google+ sites or in their emails with a link to your site or your Amazon page. To help them send regularly images and info about you or your books that they can copy/paste into their social media sites.
    .
  • Help with “blurbs”. Your friends or family members might have websites and blogs. Ask them to consider sending out a short note about your book, which can help you sell more books. If they allow you to use their words in your “praise” section on your author website.
  • Rate useful reviews: Amazon asks readers “Was this review helpful to you? YES or NO?Rating the existing reviews as “helpful” or “unhelpful” makes a significant impact. Reviews with the most “helpful” votes appear on the BUY page “Most Helpful Customer Reviews”.
By voting for the most informative and helpful reviews, your friends have the power to get them moved to the head of the line. Raising the position of the most descriptive reviews is especially helpful if the publisher missed to give the book an effective blurb.
    .

How many reviews did YOU write?  It’s a give and take…
Compare two books with identical sales numbers: the one which has been promoted with these features is much higher in the (intern) ranks, which means it will be more featured on Amazon and subsequently will sell better in the future.  However, don’t be too worried about your books’ rank: Just like being popular in high school, it may not mean all that much in the real world.
