American Academy in Berlin
http://www.americanacademy.de

The American Academy in Berlin is now accepting applications for the 2016-2017 academic year. Deadline is September 30, 2015.  The American Academy in Berlin is a private and independent, nonprofit institute for advanced study located in Berlin, Germany. Its fellowship program promotes advanced research in a variety of academic, cultural, and political disciplines. Worldliteraturetoday.org wrote: “Since reunification—and of course famously also before—artists and writers have felt the allure of Germany’s new-old capital.  It remains slightly remote from the trends of western Europe, and—rather like New Orleans in the States has its own styles and its own cults.”
Academy fellows are comprised of established and emerging scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study.  Berlin Prizes have been awarded to historians, economists, filmmakers, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, linguists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others.  Fellowships are restricted to candidates based permanently in the US.  However, US citizenship is not required,
Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester or, in some cases, for an entire academic year.  Fellowship benefits include round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, partial board, and a stipend of $5,000 per month. The Academy’s furnished apartments at the Hans Arnhold Center are suitable for individuals and couples.  All fellows are expected to reside at the Hans Arnhold Center during the entire term of the award.
Private furnished apartments, including small kitchens, are provided in a villa on the shores of beautiful Lake Wannsee.  The Wannsee train station (a stop for S-Bahn and regional trains) is less than a ten-minute walk away.  Trains reach downtown in ten to twenty minutes.

Many writers crave a peaceful period of uninterrupted time dedicated to writing. The solution is a writers residency. A room of one’s own, maybe some meals thrown in and a little pocket money.  Or even just the room.  The opportunity to travel can lead your writing into creative, unexpected, and exciting directions.  Getting a quiet place to write could easily be a turning point in a writer’s life, providing crucial time to finish an important piece of work. It certainly doesn’t hurt to learn at least a couple of words in German.
