How to Find the Right Audiobook Narrator

Audiobooks

Choosing the right narrator for your audiobook is one of the most important decisions in the book creation process.

Which kind of voice(s) would you like in your audiobook?  What accent? British?  Australian?  A Southern State slang?  New England?  Or West coast accent?  Female or male voice? “Tenor-like” voice or more “soprano”?

Sales of audiobooks have risen by double digits annually in recent years, and a growing army of professional actors are narrating audiobooks or supplementing their incomes by voicing them.  It is important to first listen to some of the narrators’ earlier audiobook recordings.
.

Michele Lee Cobb, president of the Audio Publishers Association, told The New York Times, “There are hundreds of actors who make a living, reading books, and we are seeing more and more people trying.”

How Narrators Work
Kevin Kenerly, an American actor from Detroit, who has worked on a number of diverse audiobooks in his career, including Stephen King’s The Running Man and Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley described his working method: When a book is offered to him, he reads the first 30 to 40 pages and decides if he wants to voice it.
If he does, he finishes reading the book, then goes into the studio for four or five hours a day, preferably in the middle of the day, preferably on days when he’s not appearing onstage.  He stays at it, day after day until the job is done.  It took him about a week and a half to voice the 100,000 words of Motor City Burning.

“After I read a book I get a sense of what I want the characters to sound like and feel like,” he said.  “When I read a book I’m listening to what the author wrote.  Some people look at a novel as a text, but I look at it as language.  The narrator has a voice too, a pace, a life.  I see the people in my mind, then add the writer’s physical description to that.  I take whatever clues the writer gives me.  I’ve always read books that way.”
.

Scott Timberg wrote in Salon: “Some audiobooks — especially the classics — are read by famous actors: Nicole Kidman narrated Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, Samuel L. Jackson reads Chester Himes’ A Rage in Harlem, and Jeremy Irons has drawn acclaim for his renditions of Lolita and Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited.

Others books — including the memoirs by Tina Fey and Maya Angelou and the novels of Neil Gaiman — are read by their authors.  Some books, like Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl or David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, have multiple narrators and thus multiple actors reading them.”
.

But the majority of audiobooks are narrated by people few outside the field have heard of.  Within this world, readers like Jim Dale, a British actor who voices more than 100 characters in his recording of the Harry Potter novels, and Robin Miles, a former Law and Order actress who recently recorded Jacqueline Woodson’s novel Another Brooklyn, are revered.

These audiobook narrators are the character actors of the literary world: They are often prolific people whose work you know even if you don’t know their names.  Whether audiobooks are a vehicle for artistry or a way of paying the rent, though, they seem to be giving actors new ways to make their living.

Many narrators and voice-over artists are former and working stage actors who talk earnestly about the importance of their characters, their own commitment to the written word and the power of storytelling.

.
Author Marla Madison wrote in an article:

I added the book to the ACX site and waited for narrators to sign up for an audition. And waited. And waited. And waited even more… After making two separate attempts to get my book narrated by splitting the royalties, both narrators fizzled out.

Then by surprise, I got a message from ACX that my book had been awarded a stipend. I knew about stipends as one of the narrators I’d tried to work with had asked me if my book had one. I applied to ACX for a stipend at that time and was turned down.

Suddenly, I had dozens of narrators asking to audition for my book.
A stipend, paid by ACX to the narrator, gives them a salary of $1,000 for narrating the book and they also get paid the royalties.  So for a narrator, a good deal.  For the author, it is an opportunity to have a really great narrator to record your book.

13 Tips on How to Market Your Audiobook

Audiobook

Similar to market your print or ebook: start promoting your audiobook long before it is produced.
Let your future listeners participate in every step of your audiobook adventure via your blog articles.

.
Create Your Blog Story
Write about your search for the production company – or if you narrate it yourself about the training sessions, the equipment purchase including what you pay for each piece or the software you have to buy.

If you go with a professional narrator, let your readers know about the search, and add links to voice samples.  Offer them a survey (with your future audiobook as a prize for a randomly picked winner) in order to find the most popular narrator.

Write about the sign-up process with the narrator/production company.  Don’t be shy to mention the quoted price to let your listeners know about the investment you make with your audiobook.  Post, link and tweet frequently about the blog articles you wrote about the audiobook creation process.

Once the recording is finished, write another article about the mastering and editing process.  And finally, a blog post to announce the audiobook launch and where your latest title is available for sale.
.

Giveaway Codes
Giveaway your ACX, Findaway, Authors Republic, etc codes to interested listeners. Get them hooked on your audiobooks so they’ll tell others. Word of mouth – or word of mouse? Check out this inexpensive service: https://audiobookboom.com/authors

.
Find Audiobook Reviewers
Ask all your readers, listeners and giveaway recipients to write an honest review for your title. See also the chapter “reviewers” in our upcoming book where else you can find audiobook reviewers (more than two dozen websites, one carries even the direct email addresses of hundreds of audiobook reviewers).
.

Interviews
Host your narrator on your blog for an interview.  If your narrator has a blog, ask if they will interview you.  Create a podcast during these interviews and post it on social media.
.

Announce Your Audiobook in Your Newsletter
Inform your newsletter mailing list about your audiobook release and add a link to your podcast with a short excerpt of your audiobook.
.

Important: List Your Audiobook Everywhere
List your audiobook not only on your blog and website and ask your followers to re-post it on their own website too. For sure, you are a Goodreads member, so list your new audiobook there too – and on Shelfari and LibraryThing, two popular book lover websites.
.

Join Audiobook Groups
Join all the audiobook groups you can find on Goodreads, Facebook, also follow and join Karin Commins’ member list of audiobook lovers and reviewers.

  • Post in forums to show your expertise
  • Write articles that can be reprinted in e-zines
  • Offer to speak at a library event about the audiobook creation process.

Audiobook Narration & Voice-Over Training

Excerpt of our upcoming book:
Audio Books for Success –
How to Create, Publish, and Market Your Audiobooks and Podcasts

AudioBooks

No matter if you just want to narrate and create your own audiobooks or if your goal is a career as a voice-over artist – you are going to need proper training, equipment, resources, and some natural talent to make a career as a voice actor.

For work that requires the skill set and equipment for professional audiobook narration, it’s important to learn as much as you can beforehand.  As the narrator is in most cases also the audiobook producer and responsible for ALL phases of the production, a certain amount of technical and software/computer skills need to be acquired too.

The great news is that even though the voice-over industry is competitive, there is plenty of voice-over work out there for everyone.

However, audiobook narration is not the only path you can go. You will be able to include doing voices for videos, documentaries, cartoons, speaking on the radio and narrative movie ads.
.

Test the Waters – Take Some Online Classes First
Online classes are great because you can learn at your pace and you can learn from the best voice actors and coaches in the industry no matter where you live. Before heading to LA or Chicago to take expensive voice-over or narrator classes, listen to other voice actors.

.
You Control the Cost

The length of your work and the narrator selected determine the cost for creating your audiobook.  Narrators are quality checked and approved by our audio experts.  Narrator rates are shared on a “per finished hour” (PFH) basis, and the general estimate is every 9,000 words of text equals one finished hour of audio.  For example, if your book is 72,000 words, it would be approximately eight finished hours.

FindawayVoices works with you to make the right decisions when creating your audiobooks.  They provide a list of suggested narrators at a range of PFH rates.  This lets you choose the right voice at the right price.  The range is typical $150 to $400 per finished hour.  See a table on their website to better estimate your potential audiobook investment: https://findawayvoices.com/pricing/

FindawayVoices gives authors everything they need to create professionally narrated audiobooks, including:

  • Full Control—With FindawayVoices, you set the price, own the rights, control marketing, choose your distributors, and never sign an exclusivity agreement.
  • Global Distribution—You’ll gain access to a global platform that reaches consumers in more than 170 countries, through all major audiobook sellers across retail, library, and K12 channels (and yes, this includes Audible).
  • Custom Narrator Casting—The experts at FindawayVoices review your book and create a tailored list of recommended narrators at a range of prices for your specific title.  FindawayVoices will work with you at every step to ensure you choose the right voice at the right price for your book.
  • Professional Production—All narrators are vetted for quality, and all audiobooks are quality-checked before publication, giving rights holders an extra level of assurance.
  • Full Service and Support–As an author, who distributes via D2D you are used to high-level customer support, and you can expect the same with FindawayVoices. If you have any questions or need help, you can reach out to an expert.
  • Already have an audiobook?—If you have already produced your audiobook, you can distribute through FindawayVoices without exclusivity, and at no cost.

You will be able to quickly and easily start the audiobook production process, right from your D2D publication page.  Once you have converted your ebook, you can start creating your audiobook with FindawayVoices, with full support from their team.  You can determine your production budget, select a narrator, and have your book produced and distributed to a large, robust audiobook network – which includes not only online retailers, but also libraries and independent bookstores.

As the author or publisher, you keep 80% of all royalties FindawayVoices receives, which vary by partner, channel, and business model.  The royalties FindawayVoices receives from its partners are within the following ranges:

  • A la carte: 40% to 50% of list price
  • Subscription: 30% to 40% of list price
  • Amazon Audible: 25% of the sales price (Audible’s standard, non-exclusive terms)

.
Frequent Asked Questions

Who owns the rights to the finished audiobook?

You!  Authors and publishers who work with FindawayVoices always own the rights to their works.

Do you require exclusivity?

Absolutely not!  You will never be asked to sign an exclusivity agreement. We believe in opening the audiobook market for authors and publishers and work tirelessly to introduce audiobooks to new listeners through our products, partnerships, relationships, and innovations.

How does FindawayVoices compare to ACX?

Well, in several ways.  With FindawayVoices, you’re never asked for exclusivity, you control the price for your book, and we give you control over marketing and promotions.  Our team works with you to guide the process and ensure creating an audiobook is easier than it’s ever been!

I’m an international author, can I work with FindawayVoices?

Yes! FindawayVoices is available to authors and publishers in all countries and can recommend narrators to match unique accent and style demands.

I’m a publisher. Can I use FindawayVoices to distribute my catalog?

Yes! Contact FindawayVoices at support@findawayvoices.com to discuss how Voices in more detail.

What’s with the $49 fee?

D2D PUBLISHERS DO NOT HAVE TO PAY THE $49 ADMIN FEE!

This is a one-time administrative fee that covers project management during production, and ongoing administrative tasks such as consolidated royalty reporting, ISBN registration (if you don’t have your own ISBN), post-processing, final mastering, and other behind-the-scenes tasks carried out, for every audiobook produced. This fee applies to production only, and you will not have to pay the fee if you provide your own audiobook.

How does FindawayVoices compare to Author’s Republic?

FindawayVoices is similar to Author’s Republic in that they offer audiobook distribution, but are different in a few ways that set them apart:

  • FindawayVoices is a single service where authors can both create and distribute their works. If you have created your own audiobook files, you can also choose distribution only.
  • Regarding distribution: With FindawayVoices, you keep 80 percent of all royalties earned through the sale of your recordings.  Author’s Republic, for example, offers only 70 percent.
  • FindawayVoices will NEVER ask you for exclusivity. You are always free to distribute your titles anywhere else you like, and you always have complete control over where your titles are available within their network.

.

EXCERPT FROM OUR UPCOMING BOOK ON SUCCESS WITH AUDIO-BOOKS:

Creating an AudioBook

How much does it cost to create an audiobook?

  • The cost of narration is calculated on a “per-finished-hour” basis and will vary based on several factors, including the length of the book, narrator selected, and complexity. FindawayVoices will provide suggested narrators at a range of “per-finished-hour” rates to best meet your cost needs.
  • Contact FindawayVoices at support@findawayvoices.com to learn more.
  • The only other charge is a one-time fee of $49.00 to cover project management during production and ongoing administrative tasks such as consolidated royalty reporting. But:
  • NOTE: D2D customers will not have to pay the $49 admin fee for their audiobook!

What does per-finished hour mean?

“Per Finished Hour” is the standard way payment is calculated in the audiobook industry. Narrators are compensated for each hour of finished recording, rather than by studio hour since this can vary.  9,000 words equal one finished hour.  72,000 manuscript words would be approximately eight finished hours of audio.

How do I choose a narrator?

First, contact Findaway at support@findawayvoices.com. To find the right narrator for your book, we’ll ask you a few simple questions to guide our suggestions (book subject/genre, emotional tone, protagonist profile) and then prepare a curated list of narrators for you to choose from. All narrator recommendations from Voices are tailored to your style preferences and material. We’ll include voices at a range of per-finished-hour rates to ensure you get the right voice at the right price. Every narrator in our talent pool has been vetted for professionalism and quality.

Can I hear a sample of my book performed by a narrator?

Of course! Before committing to a narrator, you can request a sample of that voice paired with your work. Simply share with us with a sample chapter (or the full manuscript) and we’ll coordinate with the narrator or narrators you choose to provide you with samples.

What is the approval process?

You review the first 15 minutes of your audiobook before committing to the full performance. Once the first section is approved, your narrator will continue recording the remainder of your work, providing completed chapters for your review, and adjusting to any feedback along the way. You will provide final approval for the audiobook before it is published.

How long will it take to create my audiobook?

Project timeframe varies based on each book’s length, but 6-8 weeks is typical from project start to your title is available for sale.

Do you offer royalty sharing as an option for compensating narrators?

Currently, FindawayVoices does not offer royalty sharing though we may consider it in the future.

Can I narrate my own audiobook?

Yes! You’ll follow almost the same process as if you were selecting a narrator, except you’ll be the one recording….and approving the work! FindawayVoices have narration guidelines to ensure a high-quality standard.

Can I recommend a narrator or use a narrator I already work with?

Absolutely! All of the narrators we work with are independent contractors. FindawayVoices can work with your current narrator(s) to ensure consistency within your catalog if that’s important to you. Just put us in touch!

Where will my audiobook be available for sale?

With Findaway Voices, your audiobook will be distributed through the world’s largest network of audiobook sellers, representing a variety of industry partners, sales channels, and business models. .

The Wolf’s Moon has been on the market for the past three years and is still holding its own.  I sent copies to my brothers only to find out unless there are pictures with the words, well… you can imagine the rest.  Then, I met a fourth-grade teacher who told me she no longer had time to read novels anymore. Rachel said she did miss that part of her life, but her kids came first – as well they should.

My plight was how to reach people who just did not read for whatever the reason. After spending some hours talking with my wife, she suggested that we again look into an audio book.
.
Creating an audiobook takes a rather long-term commitment to follow-through with the project.  It requires due diligence in learning everything you can about the world of audiobook publishing and it has the same learning curve as print or eBook author publishing.  Anyone who dives headfirst into this career choice is committed to a lifetime of learning about the publishing industry.
.
In the following article, I will touch on important points to consider during your path how to create your audiobook masterpiece.
.
Is your book ready for audio?
Remember, the book itself must be well on its way to popularity by the use of various marketing techniques. Branding is a critical technique so that your followers recognize all of your works.
.
Are you ready for audio?
This project takes time and a lot of critical thinking about bringing the book to life. For example, one must choose the narrator who is capable of transforming the written words from reading to listening pleasure, an entirely different platform altogether.
.

You now have a new audience to court in addition to everything else!
Do readers necessarily like to listen to audiobooks? Some yes, some no. Audiobook lovers have their very own niche! It is critical to read everything you can get your hands on in order to understand the audio niche.
.
How do you choose the right narrator?
This is critical in the creation of the story you wish to tell.  Storytelling is the most important function you will provide to the reader.  Please refer to my post about Storytelling by Sarah-Jane Murray (used by permission).
.
Thus, the narrator that you choose must be exactly what you are looking for. You are prompted to describe what you are looking for insofar as the accent, a regional accent, language, man, woman and so on. It is actually a fun process to begin to hear your book come to life. ACX Audible has a wealth of narrators from which you can interview. They direct you how to upload a sample reading for the narrator. At that point, you can accept or reject that audition and move on to the next narrator. Please note…this is NOT an easy task and takes quite some time to choose the right fit for your book. Luckily, we auditioned two excellent narrators that ACX selected from our specifications.

We chose Mark Westfield with Westfield Audio Arts.  He is an independent contractor that owns his own business. To read about Mark Westfield, please refer to this SNEAK PEAK blog post.

If you would like to contact Mark Westfield to produce your audiobook you can contact him at Mark@WestfieldAudioArts.com

.
The Wolf’s Moon by Patrick Jones is exclusive on Amazon, thus available on KDP.  We have 114 reviews with a rating of 4.3 at Amazon.  We published in 2012 and it is now 2015… so we weren’t ready to consider audiobooks for 3 years.
.
However, in which stage of book publishing you are in, you must consider the possibility early on so as to capitalize on every piece of information you can gather.  We began the audiobook publishing process at the beginning of 2015.  We had previously entertained looking at other audiobook production vendors, thus having a rudimentary idea of what we were looking at.
.

We ultimately chose ACX Audible as the vendor of choice.  Why, you ask?

  • Vendor recognition and popularity in the industry
  • An Amazon subsidiary
  • Education and literature accessibility
  • Prompt response
  • Phone support
  • A wealth of narrators to choose from
  • And last, but not least, the cost.  Audiobooks can be a very expensive proposition.  At ACX Audible, we created an audiobook for no initial outlay of funds.  However, we do share the rights for 7 years with Amazon on a 60/40 proposition…the 60% royalty goes to Amazon; the 40% royalty is split between the author and the narrator.  There is also a $50 “bounty” program for attracting new audiobook listeners to Audible (also split between the author and the narrator).  Make sure to study your contract before you sign on the dotted line. There are also other packages at ACX Audible to produce your audiobook, all differing in cost to the author. The Wolf’s Moon chose to share the royalties for 7 years. Please refer to the article on the ACX blog for further information:
    http://blog.acx.com/2015/07/14/you-kept-your-audiobook-rights-now-what/
    .
Now, you may ask yourself: “Why in the world would someone want to give up 80% of their royalties in order to produce an audiobook?”
    .
  • The audiobook royalties are just that – only applying to the audiobook itself, not your original book royalties.  The production cost of an audiobook can run into the thousands of dollars on other platforms.
  • The audiobook is available on 3 platforms, ACX Audible, Amazon, iTunes for better market penetration. In other words, this ALSO markets your book
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – Now your “buzz” is logarithmic
  • Support narrators worldwide…they are very special because they have the talent to “become” the book and bring it to life…plus, they have to work directly with you which is not always easy!
  • Amazon is still the largest book dealer and owns virtually everything with Jeff Bezos as the CEO
  • Exclusivity with ACX Audible as well as Amazon
  • More books, more audiobooks, more “buzz” for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • A wonderful gift to leave to other generations when you are gone
  • Bringing your book to life is the most indescribable feeling when you hear it
  • PLUS…when you produce the audiobook, the narrator also finds errors in your book because they have to read it thoroughly and create the atmosphere, thus another edit per se, although then you have to go back and re-Kindle the book for the errors
    .

A new adventure begins…

Thank you for taking the time to digest all of the information above!
The Linden Chronicles is the home of The Wolf’s Moon by Patrick Jones. We have reached this point in our adventure and will periodically update you on the progress as we make it.  We also thought we would never get to this point, but the release is this week in August 2015!  How exciting is that?

eBook or Print Book? Short Answer: All Three

Not only eBook AND print, but ALSO audio!

.
eBook-PrintBook

A survey of book-buying behavior from Nielsen “Books & Consumers”, listed sales of books from January through September 2014:

  • eBooks accounted for 32 per cent of book unit sales
  • Paperback books made up 43 per cent of book unit sales
  • Hardcover books were 25 per cent of book unit sales

Surveys measured ONLY trade publishers who delivered to bookstores and large online retailers. Numbers of author-publishers (often without an ISBN) are different, but one can see that print books are still relevant.
.

eBook Sales by Online Retailer
Amazon continues to be the leader with 57 per cent of readers reporting buying e-books through this retailer in 2014.  Amazon’s closest competitor is Barnes & Noble, where 14 per cent of reader purchased ebooks via the Nook store in 2014, and 6 per cent of readers reported buying e-books through the Apple store.
.

Selling both print and digital copies of your books, you have your basis covered for maximizing book sales.
.

eBooks vs Print Books – Some Things To Consider
Obviously eBooks are easier and cheaper to publish, whereas there are more costs associated with a print book. With a digital version, you can get your book out quickly and offer it at a lower price, which in turn means they can publish books more frequently.
The growth of e-book sales is increasing in other parts of the world.  This will especially be seen in all developing countries where the use of smartphones is growing, allowing readers easy access to digital books.  So make sure that your e-books are available for sale worldwide and tap into this growing e-book market.

When weighing the decision between e-books vs print books, determine which book version your audience usually purchases.  For example romance and erotic books are usually only read as e-books.  But for all other genres are other reasons why you should have both:

  • You can give out review copies to newspaper/magazine or book blog reviewers
  • To be hosted at local media / TV interviewers who want to see/show a copy of your book
  • To sell your book easier to libraries
  • To participate in a Goodreads Giveaway
  • To sell your book to those who really don’t want an e-Reader or just love paper books
  • If you write non-fiction it is almost a MUST to have it in print
  • You have an ISBN number and can get listed with Bowker at WORLDWIDE bookstores
  • Physical books are just nicer to give on Christmas – unless you put an e-book on a new e-Reader and wrap it
  • To sell more e-books!  Yes – because they seem to cost so much less in comparison to your print book
  • To list your book in more categories / genres on Amazon: per book type you are allowed to choose two categories / genres.  Two print and two digital versions – which increases your book’s visibility and also shows you exactly in which genre you have the most success.

.
Why an Audio-Book?
Stephen King just released a new short story as an AUDIO-BOOK exclusive!
And Bob Mayer, successful author of more than 50 books, explains: “Initially, as I learned how to use ACX, (Amazons Audio Book Company) I moved slowly, with only one other title going live that month. Since then, though, as I saw sales accelerate, I began putting multiple titles into production. Just recently, my 27th title went live.”
.

There are so Many Benefits of Audio-Books:
Listening let’s you multitask while driving long distance, walking the dog, or laying on the beach. And certainly a wonderful way for blind people to easily enjoy books. Audio-books can be listened to on an iPod or iPhone / SmartPhone or MP3 player, even on most e-readers such as Kindle and Nook.
.
Each Book Format has its Advantages:
Readers might prefer physical books when it’s something that they need to reference; or just for the pleasure of holding a book in their hands.  With
e-books you’re buying the license, not the actual books. What if you install the Kindle application on a lot of devices, but the book you buy only allows 4 devices? Often readers prefer e-books with fiction, and print with non-fiction.  While traveling or jogging they might enjoy audio-book.  It might be really smart to offer books in a variety of formats: print, digital and audio.

All-You-Can-Read Kindle E-book Subscriptions

.

Kindle-Unlimited

.

Just hours after I wrote about an upcoming rental service it is now officially announced by Amazon…
Amazon is offering an e-book rental service: “Kindle Unlimited”. The “all-you-can-read” book service will cost $9.99 per month. Amazon’s big advantage here: they are offering nearly 8,000 titles in Audio-book format and over 600,000 book titles. The current Kindle Owner’s Lending Library has a one-book-per-month cap, so this could be an option for Prime users who want more access.

Lots of Competition Already
Amazon certainly enters a crowded field and will have to compete with Scribd and Oyster. Scribd, which launched a book subscription service last October, charges $8.99 for access to best-sellers, classic books and new releases from bigger trade publishers. They have 80 million users and offer works from 900 publishers. They allow users to contribute works.
Oyster boasts access for $9.95 to more than 500,000 books, but the majority of those titles come from self-publishing service companies, such as Smashwords.

.
How Much will Authors Receive?
Amazon’s official announcement for writers/publishers:  “KDP authors and publishers who enroll their books with U.S. rights in KDP Select are automatically enrolled in Kindle Unlimited. Inclusion in Kindle Unlimited can help drive discovery of your book, and when your book is accessed and read past 10% you will earn a share of the KDP Select global fund. For the month of July we have added $800,000 to the KDP Select global fund bringing the total to $2 million.

KDP Select is an optional program that makes your book exclusive to Kindle and eligible for the following benefits:

  • Reach more readers – With each 90-day enrollment period, your book will appear in Kindle Unlimited in the U.S. and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (KOLL) in the U.S, U.K., Germany, France, and Japan which can help readers discover your book.
  • Earn more money – When your book is selected and read past 10% from Kindle Unlimited or borrowed from KOLL, you’ll earn your share of the monthly KDP Select Global Fund. You can also earn a 70% royalty for sales to customers in Japan, Brazil, India, and Mexico.
  • Maximize your sales potential – Choose from two promotional tools including: Kindle Countdown Deals, time-bound promotional discounts for your book, available on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, while earning royalties; or Free Book Promotion, where readers can get your book free for a limited time.

Gigaom.com explains:  “If you’re a self-published author participating in KDP Select, however, it looks as if your book can be included without your explicit permission simply under the terms and conditions you already agreed to: According to one poster on the Kindle Boards, “Books in Select will automatically be enrolled. Like the KOLL you won’t be able to opt-out if you’re in Select.  You will be payed [sic] if you someone reads 10% or more of your book. The payment will come out of the same KOLL fund, just as if it was a borrow.” That “same KOLL fund” is a set pool of money from which self-published authors are paid each time their book is borrowed.”

.
Author-publishers have an advantage: Amazon doesn’t have any books from the so-called “Big Five” publishers: Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Hatchette. Some of these big houses have agreements with Oyster, as well as Scribd, and are likely not cooperating with Amazon’s new service.  Read also Joe Wikerts‘ commenting blog post on this.
Amazon seems to become the 21st century’s digital library.  “Kindle Unlimited” could completely change the market.  Why purchase individual e-Books or bulky physical copies when you can read hundreds of thousands of books for just $9.99?

.

Also Available: “Kindle FreeTime Unlimited” for Children
Amazon already offers a and-curated subscription of kid-safe apps, books and videos. They explain on their website:
“Kindle ‘FreeTime Unlimited’ is the first-ever all-in-one subscription that brings together all the types of content that kids and parents love – books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows. With unlimited access to thousands of hand-picked titles for kids ages 3-8, parents don’t have to spend time (and money) guessing what their kids will enjoy, and kids can explore a world of age-appropriate content on their own – NO ads, NO in-app purchases.”
“Kindle FreeTime Unlimited gives kids the freedom to choose from thousands of the most popular books, games, apps, and shows for hours of fun and learning. Unlimited access starts at just $4.99 per month, with special pricing for Amazon Prime members from $2.99 per month.”

Screen Limits
“Many parents choose to limit their child’s screen time, but doing so without the proper tools is difficult. With Kindle FreeTime, parents can set daily limits, or restrict certain categories – like games and video – while leaving unlimited time for reading. In Kindle “FreeTime” mode, web browsing and purchasing content are also disabled.”

Selling Audio-Books and E-books to Libraries

.

Sarasota-Library

.

How Do Libraries Get Their e-Books?
OverDrive, the main distributor to libraries has more than 1,000,000 e-book titles available and growing. They were the early pioneers in the digital lending space and developed the e-book lending systems used by most libraries today. Overdrive uses the same Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Management) system as Kobo, Sony, B & N and Google Books to protect files from piracy and manage the lending period of library e-books. Overdrive also offers a program called “Advantage” where individual libraries and library systems buy extra titles or copies to fill local demand.
.
Audio-Book and e-Book Lending Exploded
In these statistics you can see the tremendous growth in circulation numbers from just one library during the last years. In the meantime the numbers are much higher!

Audio-books
August 2005 – 231
August 2009 – 16,680
Ebook
Nov. 2009 – 17,521 ——— 776
Jan. 2014 – 57,672 —– 191,303

.
Technology Challenges
Libraries face many challenges from setting up their internet infrastructure to the actual ebook license acquisitions. In regards to e-Books the initial problems were: staff training and learning how to use and upload e-Books to different devices. Integrating the titles into the library system’s online catalog took some time. Getting a download link from the catalog took even more time.
.

Trade Publishers are the Problem
Acquiring the ebooks, is a problem for most libraries because e-book licensing from trade publishers can cost as much as or more than a print book. Several publishers still refuse to sell to the library market. Other publishers are taking advantage on cost and “metering.” Random House will charge $83 for an eBook and Harper Collins has a 26-time checkout limit. Libraries “buy” the books, but ownership is determined by the vendor/publisher agreements. If a contract is not renewed will the library still own the titles?

The e-book library market is split between vendors and devices. Costs of content and administrative fees are increasing which can make e-books more expensive than print. Library users persevere because the rewards of checking out e-books from a library are tremendous with the ever-growing inventory of e-books. Yet there are usually a couple extra steps between checking the item out and loading it onto a device. Using an app does seem to solve a lot of this trouble.
.

Selling e-Books to Libraries
The Washington County Library System in Minnesota, United States, has been growing their e-book collection in the last few years. Their entire system is using an innovative method to develop their ebook portfolio. Local authors are encouraged to submit their own novels in electronic format to add to the existing library system using “Library Local Connect.”. A similar initiative is currently in place in Douglas County, Colorado, USA. This helps libraries to increase their online e-book portfolio and gives exposure to local authors.  Ask your library if they have a similar program.
.

Small Publishers
Overdrive downloads into the library catalog. However, as an author, if you’re interested in getting your ebooks into libraries, you have limited choices. They are explaining on their website:  “OverDrive delivers BEST-SELLING digital audio-books, eBooks, music, and video for download directly from a custom-built ‘Virtual Branch’ website. The world’s leading libraries, including New York Public Library, Toronto Public Library, and Singapore National Library, use OverDrive to deliver content to their patrons.”

Which means dealing with the wholesaler/distributor OverDrive works only for authors who can proof great sales numbers. Hopefully sales to libraries will one day be commonplace.

Treasure of Saint-Lazare, a Novel About Paris

,
Treasure-of-Saint-LazareSharon Fawley for Readers’ Favorite:

Treasure of Saint-Lazare“, by John Pearce, is a mystery about events far distant in time and
space that profoundly affect the peaceful life of a wealthy American businessman living in Paris.”

“… Pearce weaves richly textured descriptions of life in Paris through an intricate plot with believable, well-drawn characters.”

“Overall, this is a satisfying mystery, a surprising love story, and an up close look into the dark days of Europe as WWII drew to a close.”

Reviewer:
“One thing I loved about this book is that the author beautifully describes Paris in a very romantic way, and its description appears seamless within the story.”

About the Novel:
An older lover brings a cryptic letter to Paris, pulling Eddie Grant reluctantly into a treacherous web of intrigue and death — but giving him a slim chance to find the terrorists who murdered his family seven years before.
.
It launches him on a dangerous quest through Paris and the Loire Valley for the most valuable piece of Nazi loot that remains missing, a famous Raphael self-portrait from the early 16th century, along with the crates of Nazi bullion that accompanied it — all intended to finance the Fourth Reich.

Jen Wetzmuller, daughter of his father”s World War II colleague in Army Intelligence, arrives in Paris, bearing a letter she found after

her father was run down by a car on the streets of Sarasota. Its clues take Eddie from his Paris home to Florida, where he works to solve the mystery, barely escaping with his life. Then it”s back home to burrow into the darkest reaches of the German occupation in search of the treasure. Along the way he and Jen restart the brief, fiercely passionate affair that he abandoned, to his regret, 20 years before Sarasota. Most of all, Treasure of Saint-Lazare is a novel about Paris.
.
John Pearce:
Treasure of Saint-Lazare is based on fact, the theft in 1939 of the priceless Raphael painting “Portrait of a Young Man,” which disappeared in 1945. Even though it covers much ground — from my current home of Sarasota, FL, to my part-time home of Paris, to Poland during the war, it is at heart a novel of Paris.”
.

About the Author
John Pearce is a part-time Parisian, but lives quite happily most of the the year in Sarasota, Florida. He worked as a journalist in Washington and Europe, where he covered economics for the International Herald Tribune and edited a business magazine. After a business career in Sarasota, he spends his days working on his future books – a sequel he expects to publish later in 2014 and a prequel after that. For several months each year, he and his wife Jan live in Paris, walking its streets, and chase down interesting settings for future books and his blog, JohnPearceAuthor.com. They lived earlier in Frankfurt, Germany, which gave him valuable insights for several of the scenes in his sequel, whose working title is Last Stop: Paris.
