Happy Thanksgiving and Why We Moved the Blog

Happy Thanksgiving and Why We Moved the Blog

.

Thanks to all 705,000 visitors of this blog, to all subscribers and especially to all of you who helped to make a smooth transition from SavvyBookWriters.Wordpress.com to our “own” website here:

SavvyBookWriters.com/blog were you will find continuesly all the publishing and book marketing news, links and tips that you are used to receive several times a week on the “old” blog.
.

You Might Ask Why a Change of Name?
SavvyBookWriters.com/blog is our own site, we pay a small amount ($3.95) for hosting from BlueHost, we decide the design and we can use our own website however we want to.  The blog name is also shorter, and sounds more professional than the WordPress name.  And readers can sign up for our newsletter, which they could not on our old site.
.

Some of the Reasons for “Moving”:
A WordPress blog  (the one we used before, and which you are just reading) is “pre-fabricated”, free to use, no hosting necessary, but you don’t own it, you cannot make major changes in design and you cannot use your own plug-ins.  Wordpress also places their advertisements – which you cannot control  – in your blog.  You might not see these ads on your own computer, but at any other device e.g. a computer of friends, readers or in a library.  To prevent this, you would have to pay $30/year.  The good part:  They have an automatic spam protection which is pretty thorough!  And readers can certainly find all the previous articles (over 1,130) on this site in the future.  Just type what you are looking for, into the search function of the blog.
.

To receive every article at  SavvyBookWriters.com/blog  please sign up at the pop-up window that appears after 20 seconds.  It says: “To receive the latest blog post, enter your email address”.
.

THANKS, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

5 Reasons Why Blogging is Joy – and a Must

.
Words-for-Blogging
.

“At the very least, new authors should be blogging” – that’s what publishers and agents expect.  Blogs are an essential tool of any writer.  Not only does it get you writing on a regular schedule, it lubricates your writer’s brain, eases that fear of putting yourself out there in the world.
.

1. Top Authors are Blogging
Top author blogs include those of fantasy authors Neil Gaiman or J.A. Konrath, spirituals Paulo Coelho, Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra, and business authors Tim Ferriss and Malcolm Gladwell. They all have sold millions of copies, yet they still blog for fun and in order to sell their books, then we should definitely do the same!
.

2. Blogging is Your Exercise in Writing
Every artist needs to practice, practice, practice… Musicians need to play hundreds – if not thousands – of pieces, before they can even think about playing in front of an audience. Same is true for any other kind of art, and also sport. Athletes who want to attend a competition, let alone the Olympics, need to exercise 40 to 80 hours a week (often beside their work or studies). Blogging is an authors “training”, actually an easy one, as the books content or experiences of their writing or new things they learned can go into their articles.

.
3. A Blog is Not Only Pure Writing
New blog posts do not necessarily be a written articles, as explained in: Why Blogging Sells Your Book.

  • Photos, Videos, Podcasts,
  • Snippets from your book
  • Slide-Shares, Info-Graphics, Lists
  • Polls / Surveys
  • Re-blogging, Curating other blog articles
  • Guest posts
    .

4. Your Blog: A Marketing Essential
Your blog, along with a newsletter and website, are the best ways to build a list of online followers, you can introduce your work to an ever-widening circle of readers. Not only is blogging great for updating contacts about new events and what you are currently writing, but they are also perfect for helping your website rank higher.
.

5. More Visitors With New Content
With constantly updated content, you will for sure receive more visitors to your blog than a website. These visitors can easily be lead to visit your actual website with a link at the top left “Visit my Author Site”. Blogging increases excitement about your forthcoming books, and enlists “raving fans” to help spread the word.

Last, but not least: Blogging is a huge part of what your posts and tweets on Social Media are. Your blog facilitates networking with your peers and readers, and makes you focus on your author brand and how you want your work to be known.

Top Ten Google+ Communities for Writers

.
Community

.

More vital than knowing when and where to network with your readers or peers or to post your blogs, is finding like-minded groups of people, such as Google+ reader and blogger Communities.  There you can reach new people who are likely interested in what you are writing or blogging about…

.
Start Conversations and Share Relevant Content

Google+ Communities are for users who are more interested in vibrant conversations around topics than they are about self-promotion. Quality community members are those who share relevant content that sparks conversation or debate, and who participate in conversations by leaving comments and +1’ing posts.  Users whose intentions are to promote themselves or spam the community will most likely be removed by a moderator, so be careful how you approach your communities.

.
Posts within a community are indexed by Google
and will be found in organic search results -
which means higher ranking for you on Google’s Search Engine!

.
Avoid Too Much Promotion
When you join a community, you can find people who are interested in the same topics you are. Depending on the type of community, you may have to wait for approval before becoming a member.  Google+ Communities are for users who are more interested in vibrant conversations around topics than they are about self-promotion. Quality community members are those who share relevant content that sparks conversation or debate, and who participate in conversations by leaving comments and +1’s.  Users whose intentions are to promote themselves or spam the community will most likely be removed by a moderator, so be careful how you approach your communities..

.
How to Join a Google+ Community Step by Step

  • Go to the left side of your Google+ page with your cursor
  • click on communities
  • search or type in e.g. “books” or “blogging” and click the magnifying glass symbol
  • almost 60! communities show up, sorted by membership size
  • choose for example “Promote Your Book” with over 2,799 members and thousands of posts
  • click on their image and see lots of posts
  • on top you will see “Join this community to post or comment”
  • we are polite and click “Join community”
  • then we introduce ourselves and greet the owner of the community
  • unless most other pages, this one does not require to choose a category
  • you can post right away, either text and an image or just an image
  • Interesting:
A great feature of Google+ posts to a community is that you can edit them at any time.
    – everyone in the community can read / answer to your post (also not your timeline)
    – at most communities you can also choose if you want notifications to your email
    – on the left hand side you will find another search function where you can search this community
    – you can also see who is a member of your community and follow them
    .

Start Your Own Google+ Community
When you own or moderate a Google+ community, you can create categories to organize discussions, remove offensive content, highlight great posts, add moderators to help you keep the conversation going, invite members, or edit your community.  You can invite people to join your community – up to 500 people at a time.  Having more people usually increases the number of posts in your community, and encourages others to use it.

Tip: Anyone can share a community by clicking the “Share this community” button.  When you click it, you’ll create a Google+ post that links to the community’s page. But it won’t create an actual invitation for people to accept or decline.  Learn more at Google+ Support .

Google+ is very international
In fact, nearly three-quarters of the Google+ user base is non-American.  And it’s passion-based.  There is mostly a superior level of the conversations, the obviously great anti-troll features and the fact that Google+ has zero advertising – but does have the best photo tools and video Hangouts. However THE one important reason for writers is the fact that they will increase YOUR Google Search Engine Ranking tremendously – and with it your books exposure!

7 Tips to Promote Your Book for FREE

.
Book-Marketing-on-a-Shoestring

.
Do you want more readers for your books and articles?  There is a cornucopia of free and effective promotion tools for writers on the Internet. You can achieve these marketing goals through online activities in a fun way, as most writers already like to hang out in cyberspace, networking and blogging.

.
1. Join Book Communities

As an author it is a MUST to be a member of these communities and a free (other than your time) way to introduce your book(s) and show your book titles. Join GoodreadsWattpadScribdBookMoch or Shelfari. More on my blog about book communities and for direct links. Post snippets (or chapters) of your book to excite potential readers at Wattpad – see my blog about Wattpad: 15 million readers before the book was even published.
.

2. Use Your Signature
Never send out an email without your author’s signature. You have probably heard this advice before, but: do you use the gains of e-mail signatures to market and promote your books?
Every day you send out emails to friends, business colleagues, your lawyer or accountant, potential clients, potential readers … If you have an email signature, you are constantly sending people “passive” marketing, spreading the word about you, your brand and your books. Create your email signature right now!
.

3. Involve Social Networks
Show up on Google+, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Facebook and Linkedin (be at least on Google+ and one more of these networking sites).  Click on “public” when posting on Google+ and your content will be immediately picked up by Google’s search engines. If you share interesting links (and your blog posts), and offer great free information, you will quickly become a favorite in these social networks. Your followers and connections on Social Media will later become your fan base, read and subscribe to your blog posts and newsletters and read / buy your books.
.

4. Comment on Other Blogs
Take the time to find bloggers who write about topics similar to those you write about. When they have something good to say or you can add something to what they have written, leave a comment on their blog. Each time you do so, you leave behind a link to yourself, your website, or your blog. If people who read your comment find what you have written interesting, they will click on the link to find out more about you. They may then decide to become regular blog readers or subscribers, newsletter subscribers, or book buyers.
.

5. Start and Maintain a Blog Yourself
Blogs serve as the best tool for increasing online visibility as these are constantly updated and thus attractive for search engines. The more visible you, your book, your website, and your blog become, the more traffic (readers) your blog will attract. This means more buyers for your book now or when it is released. To create a successful blog, write about something you feel passionate about and do so often and consistently. That’s all it takes.
.

6. Contribute Content to e-Zine Article Directories
Recycle parts of your blogged book manuscript or blog posts into short articles you can post in content farms or e-zine article directories, such as Ezinearticles.com, Amazines.com, or Blogs of the Week and many more.  Almost all have a resource box for a short bio and a link back to your website, book, blog, or subscription form. These articles are picked up by other bloggers, newsletter editors, e-zine editors, etc., and each time your resource box is featured. Readers click on your links to find out more about you, subscribe to your blog and newsletter or purchase your book.  You can even use an e-zine article distribution services, such as http://www.submityourarticle.com, and get your articles distributed to hundreds of e-zine directories at once, making it available to hundred- thousands of new readers and possible book fans.
.

7. Optimize your Amazon Page
The first step of all you can do to climb up to bestseller status:

- “autograph” Kindle books
– choose the best categories for your books and update them regularely
– add tags/keywords/subjects to your book listing for more exposure
– add lots of reviews, “About the Author” and additional information to your Amazon sales page
– get the most out of your Amazon Central account, create a brilliant authors page
– find out which part of your books your customers highlight the most on the Kindle and post it on your website or blog.
.

No Money? No Problem!
Success in social media book marketing, using the tools described here, doesn’t require any financial investment. Depending on your level of involvement, it may demand a strong time commitment, at least in the beginning.  Yet, as more you use these marketing tools, as faster you can handle them and as more visitors and buyers you will get.

5 Tips to Gain Readers With Great Headlines

.
Headlines

.
How to Choose a Compelling Headline
Most Popular Words & Phrases in Blog and Website Headlines – or Non-Fiction Books for That Matter: Your blog or website headline is the first, and perhaps only, impression you make on a prospective readers and lure them into your article. A compelling headline must promise some kind of benefit or reward for the online visitor.

.
Most Popular are – in this Sequence:

  1. List Post, for example “Top 33 Websites …” or “99 Top Websites …”
  2. You / Your, for example “How Do You Decide…” “Your Success …”
  3. Free / Giveaway, for example “Free eBooks …” “Goodreads Giveaway for …”
  4. How To, for example “How to Choose a Compelling Headline”
  5. Secret, for example “The Secret to Becoming Successful and Happy”

.
It doesn’t make sense to spend hours in creating high quality content and then put little thought into writing a good headline. If you want to attract more views to your website or your writing, then your headlines should also be optimized for search engines. Use likely search terms and front-load your headlines with the most important keywords.

.
Dress it up With Emotion-stirring Words
Author Kathrin Tschiesche in Bookboon.com: “Frequently, when two headlines are relevant, clear and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) friendly, the headline that gets more clicks is the one that uses emotionally stirring words aimed at capturing readers’ attention. You too, can really ‘dress up’ your headline by adding a few compelling words to it.”
“For example, try to add the adjectives “eye-catching”, “sizzling”, “compelling” or “magnetic” to the word “headlines” and you achieve an appealing and attainable effect. If you are not sure which power words to choose – a variation of “fast”, “simple”, and “easy” are your safest bet.”
.

Mark Thompson Compiled a Great List of 150 Compelling Headlines:

.
Last But Not Least:
Keep your headlines short – no more than eight words. Most visitors will scan the first few words before deciding to read further – or to move on. If your headline / tagline combination is short but summarizes your content, visitors will be more likely to read on. Remember: On average, 8 out of 10 people will read your headline, but only 2 out of 10 will read the rest. That’s why your headlines are so important for your writings’ success and to entice more than 20% of potential readers.

Are You Blogging or Writing an Online Diary?

.

Blog-Writing

.

Readers are always curious to find out more about an author, or to see more of her or his writing.  What would a book lover expect when visiting their favored writers pages? An author bio, background stories to the book(s), maybe something about the writing and publishing process, news about upcoming books and a sneak peek (maybe even a chapter) into the next one, even a prequel or a link to a prequel. Visit blogs or website logs from famous writers and you see often great blog examples

.
Blog or Diary?
A diary “offers the potential to reveal a fully fledged identity, one with hopes, doubts, petty occupations and grand aspirations.  In contrast to a diary, the blog is conscious of its readers from the outset: testimonies, commentaries, journalism … are components of a blog. Blog posts are an important part of an author’s platform, it will improve your Google ranking, they are material to tweet and post about and are the gateway to more readers and customers.

.
Professional Writing
Keep in mind that not only your readers find your blog posts, but also literary agents and publishers, as well as potential business partners. Being in a profession (of writing) requires a business-like blog, not a diary where you talk about your feelings and your daily occurrences.  Readers want to read about your book or writing, not who came on Sunday for dinner, your shopping experiences at a mall or your menopause.

.
Blog Post Like A Professional
In a great article, Reginal Chan gives valuable advises, read the whole post to learn more:

  • Before you start drafting your blog, you need to have a great plan in mind:
  • Why you are writing this blog?
  • Knowing the reasons why readers are coming to your blog
  • How you can attract potential readers to your blog
  • What can you do to ensure they stay longer on your blog
  • How to market your writings and further increase the blog traffic

And Don’t Forget:

  • Preparing a killer title and excerpt
  • Content is King!
  • Use videos, images, slides etc. – just everything visual
  • Quote people
  • State resources
  • Call to action

Stephen King advised in an interview:
“Jot down a list of blog topics you could write about. Circle the ones at least 80% of your readers would find irresistible. Write about those topics and nothing else. Simple, but it takes discipline. The better you become at cultivating that discipline, the more popular your writing will become. If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”
.

Author Jon Morrow comments:
Of course, most bloggers do neither. We start a blog, squeeze in the occasional post, between going to the gym and picking up take-out, and then expect it to somehow lead to fame and fortune.
Sorry, but that’s not how it works. Every popular blogger I know reads at least one book every week and writes at least 1,000 words every day. Yes, it’s a lot, but success comes at a price, folks. Are you willing to pay it?
