Ask any serious blogger about a major blogging mistake they have made. All of them will tell you the same: their biggest regret is failing to set up an email list as soon as they started their blog.
I am guilty of this as well, I started years too late! It took me exactly 1,500 blog posts – several of them about the benefits of email newsletters – until I sent out my own one. Don’t make the same mistake.
Harness your large readership and your social media followers. Invite them to sign up for your email newsletters. Offer them a free feature (a short ebook) or a personalized sign-up form on your website. Both should be connected with your own email newsletter providers such as MailerLite, AWeber, Shopify, and others.
.
Make sure your sign-up form is easy to find on your website. Encourage readers to sign up in your book’s backmatter. Ask current subscribers to share the newsletter with their friends.
.
Email marketing offers a personalized interaction with your audience:
- Provide content worth reading
- Grab the reader with the headline/subject
- Write for your audience and what interests them
- Keep it short and simple
- Keep the newsletter regular
.
With organic reach declining, spending money on ads becoming a requirement, and collaboration increasing in popularity, an author’s email list will be an incredibly valuable asset.
.
How To Grow Your Newsletter Email List?
• Add a sign-up form to blogs and websites
• Create an opt-in link in your ebook
• Invite readers at book signings to opt-in for the newsletter
• Ask social media followers and friends via tweets/posts
.
Your email list is a marketing channel that you actually own! Contrary to that you could lose connections on social media (think Google+) or you don’t know who buys your books (think Amazon). But what you can never lose are your email newsletter subscribers. Copy their email addresses in case the provider goes bust.
Once you have a reader’s email, you have a direct, inexpensive line to them. Readers who give you their email addresses are also opting in. They WANT you to email them. Otherwise, they wouldn’t sign up.
.
What You Could Include in Your Newsletter:
- Book signing events
- Writers residency offers
- Freelance writing offers
- Book launches
- Book reviews
- Book Marketing tips
- Writing contests
- Editors, designers, proofreaders you can recommend
.
Email isn’t without its challenges. Gmail and other inbox providers will continue to work to declutter their user’s inboxes, so getting eyes on your content may get more difficult. It is increasingly important to maintain clean lists and to educate your subscribers to expect your emails.
.
What to Avoid:
• Sending too many newsletters – once or twice a month is enough
• Sending too few email newsletters, lapsing for months to send the next|
• Annoying readers with politic, religion, or sex topics
• Lots of spelling and punctuation errors – take advantage of Grammarly
• Frequent sales pitches
• Re-sending unopened newsletters
.
If you don’t have a mailing list, you should start one.
Once you have a mailing list, make sure to nurture it. Email your subscribers on a regular schedule. Remember to play by the rules. Don’t buy lists or email people who have not opted in to your list.
.
The point of email newsletters is to keep subscribers connected, engaged and informed about what’s new in your organization or enterprise. If you are avoiding writing a newsletter (or building an email list), you will miss out on a fantastic business opportunity!
